If your name is Ali, you're named after Ali ibn Abi Talib.
The night before Khaybar, the Prophet ﷺ said: "Tomorrow I will give this flag to a man through whom Allah will give us victory. He loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him." (Sahih al-Bukhari 4210)
People spent the whole night wondering who it would be. In the morning they all came, each one hoping it was him.
The Prophet ﷺ asked: "Where is Ali ibn Abi Talib?" They said he had an eye illness. "Send for him." When Ali came, the Prophet ﷺ put his saliva on Ali's eyes and prayed for him, and Ali was cured as if he had never been ill. Then he gave him the flag.
Ali asked: "Shall I fight them until they become like us?" And the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Go steadily until you reach them. Then invite them to Islam, and tell them what they owe to Allah. By Allah, if Allah guides even one person through you, it is better for you than red camels." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3701)
Red camels were the finest wealth of the time. He handed Ali the flag of victory, and told him the real prize was one person guided.
